About this property

Welcome to El Padrino

El Padrino is a multifaceted property blending elements of a hotel, guest house, and extended stay accommodation, situated in a quiet residential neighborhood of Akumal, Mexico. The atmosphere is informal and homey, supported by family ownership and a local vibe, with guests noting the friendly and helpful staff. Rooms come equipped with practical amenities such as air conditioning, smart TVs with Netflix, private bathrooms, and electronic keypad locks, making it suitable for travelers looking for basic comfort without luxury.

The property is LGBTQ+ friendly and caters to a diverse crowd including students and budget travelers, reflected in its range of services from transportation to student housing. Guests appreciate cleanliness and attention to detail, with amenities like bug-proof windows, fresh towels, and convenient kitchen facilities available for longer stays. Some comments highlight occasional neighborhood noise, but this is generally regarded as part of the authentic local experience rather than a significant disturbance.

Located roughly a 15-minute walk from the beach, El Padrino offers good access to Akumal’s natural attractions like the nearby Playa Akumal for snorkeling with turtles, and the impressive Two Eyes Cenote. Xel-Há, a sprawling natural aquarium, is also within easy reach. The property is approximately an hour by car from Cancun International Airport, making it reasonably accessible for travelers. Guests particularly praise the availability of bikes and local dining options close by.

The accommodation is well suited for visitors who prioritize a genuine local environment over polished tourism, including those who may prefer extended stays or a base for exploration. While not suited for guests seeking a quiet retreat or high-end amenities, it offers practical facilities and a welcoming atmosphere for those comfortable with the rhythm of small-town life and occasional street noise.

Very clean and simple. Love the smart TV and the a/c is a great addition. Short 15 minutes walk to the beach through a cute town and over a foot bridge. I've stayed here a few times and love it. The owner is very friendly and helpful.

Staff are so friendly and helpful! Being able to use a bike to get around is amazing and there’s a fantastic restaurant just around the corner (tacos y pastas)!

This hotel had a very homey feel to it. It is owned and operated by a family, and can be found in a residential neighborhood. They provided basically everything you need, with a kitchen outside the private bedrooms, private bathroom inside the private bedrooms, AC, towels, sheets, hot water, a parking spot while I was there, an electronic keypad lock on the door, spacious bedroom, TV, table & chairs, and hangers for clothes. The neighbors directly across from my room were blasting their music until about 11:00 p.m. or midnight. But, for me it was not a problem because I am a night owl and don't get to bed until midnight. The hosts at the hotel asked me whether I was going to be okay with that, as the neighbors were already playing music when I rolled in at about 5:00 p.m. I was grateful for their courtesy in asking up front. The only hard part about this place was the address on Google maps and hostelworld was slightly off. But, the local neighbors pointed me in the right direction, and it was a very safe neighborhood to be in. It was a taste of the local residential situation staying in this place. I recommend it. And I suggest calling over the phone instead of booking through a third party. You will always get a better price, and you save them from having to give a commission to a website. One last note, after staying in Mexico for 10 days, and see ing different cities, I have come to know that it is unheard of for a hostile or hotel on a budget to provide you with a blanket. Just sheets. I personally prefer a blanket even when it is warm because of the feeling of weight and security around my body.

Victor the owner is awesome. The room is super clean, including the sheets, toilet, and shower too. Fast WiFi. New Aircon unit. Netflix! Body wash, soap, air freshener, nice smelling towels (not of bleach), actually fully sealed bug nets on the windows. Super comfy bed and pillows. Hot water. Simple but all you could ever ask for. Extreme attention to detail which you rarely come across. The keys ever have a floater on them in case they slip out in the sea!! He even only charges on a per person basis - paid only $30 for a 6 person room as I was alone! I haven't felt this comfortable in many other places and I have been to hundreds! Thank you!

I loved my stay here. It's a real local feel, definitely not a hotel. But I didn't like the tourist vibe of Playa Del Carmen, so this was perfect for me. Expect to see and hear lots of children playing in the street, dogs wandering around and barking, and locals partying to all hours (Mexican's love to drink lots, eat a lot of meat, and party!) There are some great local taco stalls if you're a meat-eater, and an AMAZING market stall with incredibly priced (+ fresh) fruit and veg just 2 mins walk away. El Padrino has a kitchen with all you need to cook. :) Wifi worked well, I felt safe, and the lady who works here is ALWAYS smiling & happy to help. I didn't stay in the dorm but I would recommend the private room. Gracias x

Dogs barking in neighbourhood woke me up twice my first night, once at 3am and now again at 5:30am (update: dogs again at 6:20am). I used to live near people with poorly behaved dogs and it is no fun losing sleep because of noisy animals. Otherwise bed comfortable and room clean in dorm. Fridge in room. No drinking water available so far. Shower is cold water only. Price is right. 25 minute walk to turtle beach scam :)
